SUMMARY:Eneda Toska\, Ph.D. (Johns Hopkins) - Hybrid Epigenetics Monthly Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Eneda Toska\, Ph.D.\nAssistant Professor of Oncology\nJohns Hopkins School of Medicine\nThe Toska Lab \nDr. Toska joined the Kimmel Cancer Center as an Assistant Professor of Oncology in the Cancer Invasion and Metastasis Program (CIM)\, in close collaboration with the Women’s Malignancies Disease Group. She also was appointed to a secondary faculty position in the Bloomberg School of Public Health Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB)\, with membership in the BMB Ph.D. program. \nDr. Toska graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Biology and Chemistry from Nazareth College of Rochester; received her master’s degree from the University at Buffalo\, magna cum laude; and earned her doctorate from the University at Buffalo\, summa cum laude; completing her postdoctoral work with Dr. Jose Baselga at Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) and after a senior research scientist role with Dr. Maurizio Scaltriti at MSK. Dr. Toska has been awarded the Breast Cancer Research Alliance Young Investigator Award\, a grant from the Jayne Koskinas Ted Giovanis Foundation for Health and Policy\, a K22 Transition to Independence Award\, a grant from the Innovation in Cancer Informatics\, and has been selected as a 2021 AACR NextGen Star. \n\nThe Toska Lab’s research focus is centered on elucidating the role that transcriptional and epigenetic regulators play in normal and cancer development\, and therapeutic response. They are passionate about asking clinically relevant questions and translating basic laboratory findings into therapeutic applications to benefit cancer patients while at the same time providing new insights into the fundamental mechanisms of how epigenetic regulators regulate transcription and dictate cell identity. To achieve these goals\, the Toska lab aims to undertake a multidisciplinary approach integrating biochemistry\, cell signaling\, genomics\, and epigenomics at bulk and single-cell level\, organoid technology\, and mouse genetics to study the fundamental processes by which epigenetic regulators regulate transcription\, cross-talk with signaling pathways\, and have the ability to drive transformation and dictate therapeutic response in nuclear receptor-dependent cancers. \n\nHosted by Liling Wang\, Ph.D.

SUMMARY:Glen Liszczak\, Ph.D. (UT Southwestern) - Hybrid Epigenetics Monthly Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Glen Liszczak\, Ph.D.\nAssistant Professor\nUT Southwestern Medical Center\nThe Liszczak Lab \nGlen Liszczak is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.  He received his B.S. in Chemistry and Biology from Ramapo College of New Jersey and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania at the Wistar Institute under the supervision of Dr. Ronen Marmorstein.  As a graduate student\, Glen used X-ray crystallography and other biochemical and biophysical tools to determine the molecular basis for catalysis and substrate specificity exhibited by various protein-modifying enzymes. \nIn 2013\, Glen joined the laboratory of Professor Tom Muir as a postdoctoral fellow at Princeton University where he employed a wide array of chemical biology techniques\, including protein semisynthesis and intracellular protein delivery\, to delineate epigenetic mechanisms and their misregulation in cancer.  During his postdoctoral studies\, Glen combined protein semi-synthesis with high-throughput biochemistry and cellular biology to study proteins that interact with the genome and regulate gene expression. \nIn 2018\, Glen joined the faculty at UTSW as an Endowed Scholar.  His lab integrates chemical and biological approaches to understand the biochemical mechanisms through which enigmatic mutations and aberrant protein post-translational modification cascades lead to disease phenotypes.  Current research topics in the lab include epigenetics\, chromatin structure\, transcriptional regulation\, protein and nucleic acid trafficking\, and protein post-translational modifications such as mono- and poly-ADP-ribosylation.  Our work has uncovered key mechanisms underlying cancer development\, neurodegeneration\, and other developmental abnormalities. \nThroughout his career Glen has been the recipient of numerous awards for his research\, including the Dr. Monica H.M. Shander Memorial Fellowship\, a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award\, a Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) Recruitment of First-Time\, Tenure-Track Faculty Member Award\, a UT System Rising STARs Award\, and an American Heart Association Career Development Award. \nHosted by Erica Korb\, Ph.D.

SUMMARY:Efsun Arda\, Ph.D. (NCI) - Hybrid Epigenetics Monthly Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:H. Efsun Arda\, Ph.D.\nStadtman Investigator\nLaboratory of Receptor Biology and Gene Expression\nNCI/CCR\nThe Arda Lab \nH. Efsun Arda obtained her Ph.D. from University of Massachusetts Medical School. During her doctorate training in Dr. Marian Walhout’s group\, she studied gene regulatory networks that pertain to the metabolism of the model organism\, C. elegans. She uncovered a set of metabolic genes that are sensitive to the nutrient content of C. elegans bacterial diet. \nDriven by her interest in gene regulatory networks and developmental biology\, Dr. Arda joined the laboratory of Dr. Seung Kim at Stanford University for her postdoctoral training. As a JDRF fellow\, she developed cell sorting methods to purify primary pancreatic cells from children and adults\, and used RNA sequencing to reveal hundreds of genes that are differentially regulated during the first 10 years of human lifespan\, several of which are linked by association studies to diabetes risk. To understand how pancreatic cell type-specific gene expression programs are controlled at the genomic level\, she then combined cell sorting with robust genomic techniques\, like ATAC-Seq to delineate the regulatory chromatin landscape of human pancreatic cell types. This work revealed thousands of putative enhancer regions that explain cell type-specific gene expression in the human pancreas. Recently\, she has been characterizing the cell lineages that give rise to human pancreas using single-cell methods. \n\n\nThe pancreas is a vital organ containing hormone-producing cells organized into islets of Langerhans\, whose crucial function is to regulate blood glucose levels. Improper regulation of blood glucose leads to diabetes mellitus\, a disease that affects more than 10% of the U.S. population. Further\, uncontrolled growth of pancreatic cells leads to pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma\, which ranks 4th among cancer-related deaths in the U.S. To understand the molecular anomalies that lead to organ dysfunction and disease\, it is crucial to define how the information encoded in the human genome is used at the cellular level to establish tissue and organ systems. The research goals of the Arda Lab are to delineate the gene regulatory networks that control the development\, expansion and function of human pancreatic cells. We combine cutting-edge genomic approaches with use of primary human cells\, stem cell and genome-editing technologies to build comprehensive maps of regulatory genomes governing the establishment and growth of human pancreatic cell lineages. \n\n\nHosted by Melike Lakadamyali\, Ph.D.

SUMMARY:Justus Kebschull\, Ph.D. (Johns Hopkins) - Hybrid Epigenetics Monthly Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Justus Kebschull\, Ph.D.\nAssistant Professor\, Biomedical Engineering\nJohns Hopkins University\nThe Kebschull Lab \nDr. Kebschull grew up in Germany and received his BA and MSci from the University of Cambridge\, UK in 2011. He pursued his PhD in Tony Zador’s lab at CSHL where he developed DNA sequencing-based tools for brain mapping. In 2017 he joined Liqun Luo’s lab at Stanford University as a postdoctoral fellow\, working on the evolution of the cerebellar nuclei\, before coming to JHU in 2021. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHis research aims to understand the structure and function of the brain. To do so\, his lab takes a comparative approach and engineers molecular\, viral\, and sequencing technologies to measure neuronal connectivity networks and gene expression at scale in disease models and a wide range of vertebrates. He developed the first barcode sequencing-based approaches to map neuronal connectivity\, increasing throughput of single-neuron mapping by orders of magnitude and opening the door to single-cell comparative connectomics. His lab complements these barcoding approaches by in situ sequencing of barcodes and genes. Leveraging these technologies\, they ask questions including: How do new brain regions and connections evolve to support new computations? What are the organizing principles and fundamental circuit motifs of the vertebrate brain? And how do drugs of abuse and neurodevelopmental disorders break these principles? His work is highly interdisciplinary\, residing at the interface of molecular engineering\, neuroscience\, synthetic and evolutionary biology\, genomics\, virology\, and computational biology. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHosted by Liz Heller\, Ph.D.
