SUMMARY:Xin Liu\, Ph.D. (UT Southwestern) - Hybrid Epigenetics Monthly Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Xin Liu\, Ph.D.\nAssociate Professor\nW.W. Caruth\, Jr. Scholar in Biomedical Research\nUT Southwestern Medical Center\nThe Liu Lab \nPlease join us on Thursday\, April 10\, 2025\, as we welcome Xin Liu\, Ph.D.\, Associate Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. This event will take place in Smilow 9-146 and on zoom from 4PM – 5PM. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Liu Lab \nis interested in understanding the regulation of transcription and chromatin dynamics underlying many fundamental biological processes including differentiation\, development\, and oncogenesis. The current research of the laboratory is focused on elucidating the molecular and biophysical basis of chromatin organization\, including chromatin looping and heterochromatin formation during gene activation and silencing\, with a combined approach of structural biology\, biochemistry\, and chemical biology. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Diana Hargreaves\, Ph.D. (Salk Institute) - Hybrid Epigenetics Monthly Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Diana Hargreaves\, Ph.D.\nAssociate Professor\nSalk Institute\nThe Hargreaves Lab \nPlease join us on Thursday\, March 6\, 2025\, as we welcome Diana Hargreaves\, Ph.D.\, Associate Professor at the Salk Institute. This event will take place in Smilow 9-146 and on zoom from 4PM – 5PM. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Hargreaves Lab is interested in epigenetic regulation mediated by the BAF chromatin remodeling complex. Chromatin remodeling complexes are known to create DNA accessibility through hydrolysis of ATP to allow binding of transcription and repair factors to DNA. However\, these large multi-subunit complexes also contain many other proteins of unknown function that are critical for development and highly mutated in human disease. Our goal is to use a combination of biochemical and epigenomic assays to understand the function of these complexes during normal cellular differentiation and the mechanistic basis for diseases caused by mutations in BAF complex subunits. We are focusing on cellular models of inflammation\, cancer\, and pluripotency. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:H. Courtney Hodges\, Ph.D. (Baylor University) - Hybrid Epigenetics Monthly Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:H. Courtney Hodges\, Ph.D.\nAssociate Professor\nDepartment of Molecular and Cellular Biology\nBaylor College of Medicine\nThe Hodges Lab \nPlease join us on Thursday\, February 6\, 2025\, as we welcome H. Courtney Hodges\, Ph.D.\, Associate Professor at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Hodges will give a talk titled “Disordered interaction modules that impart specificity for chromatin and transcription.” Immediately following Dr. Hodges\, we will hear from Krista Budinich\, Graduate Student in the Wan Lab\, who will give a talk titled\, “RNA enhances the function of oncogenic transcriptional condensates formed by a mutant chromatin reader.” This event will take place in Smilow 9-146 and on zoom from 4PM – 5PM. \nAbout the H. Courtney Hodges\, Ph.D. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nResearch in the Hodges lab focuses on gene regulation in cancer and normal cells. We use interdisciplinary approaches\, including epigenomics\, live-cell imaging\, and chemical biology\, to reveal new mechanisms related to chromatin and transcription. We are especially excited by emerging therapeutics related to cancer epigenetics and other areas with translational impact.

SUMMARY:Catherine J. Peña\, Ph.D. (Princeton University) - Hybrid Epigenetics Monthly Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Catherine J. Peña\, Ph.D.\nAssistant Professor\nPrinceton Neuroscience Institute\nPrinceton University\nThe Peña Lab \nPlease join us on Thursday\, January 9\, 2025\, as we welcome Catherine J. Peña\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Professor at Princeton University. This event will take place in Smilow 9-146 and on zoom from 4PM – 5PM. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe broad goal of the Peña Lab is to understand mechanistically how early life experiences are encoded and maintained into adulthood to have long-lasting impact on behavior. The lab is currently focused on understanding how early life stress increases sensitivity to subsequent stress. This research is translationally motivated by the robust clinical finding that child maltreatment and other forms of early life stress increase the lifetime risk of depression and other mood\, anxiety\, and drug disorders. Studies in humans and animals suggest that early life stress sensitizes individuals to stress later in life\, leading to a first appearance or synergistic worsening of depression-like symptoms after additional stress.
